I agree: a beer mug with an American flag on it? I hope that was a joke.
Is there some sort of worthwhile specialty where you live? I live in Seattle, so I might consider bringing some local smoked salmon.
Are they readers? Do they read English? Do you have books you love? A good book that you love makes a really nice gift - but only if the receiver reads.
A nice pen is a nice gift.
Is there a nice-but-not-too-expensive art gallery near you? I have found numerous small pieces of art in various galleries here. Small and beautiful would work well, since you'll have to pack it. And you don't want to overwhelm them.
Hope that helps...

I just about laughed out loud at the previous answer... she wants something that wouldn't be considered tacky to a wealthy Parisien family and the suggestion is keyrings and beer mugs? Ok I have to do it.. BWAHAHAHAHA!
Since I don't know exactly where you are from I don't have any specific suggestions.. but how about something that's characteristic of your region? Perhaps a special food.. Creole spices, salmon jerky, maple syrup, something along those lines? Or a traditional American drink like Southern Comfort or Jack Daniels.. or something representative of native Americans like wood carvings or southwestern silver jewellery.

I would shop in a bookstore. Maybe a "coffee table book". There are some for every taste it seems, and the photos are usually great.
Added: Awww c'mon guys. Not everyone is hip and affluent. My parents might have suggested the same thing. When you have a MAN trying earnestly to choose a gift -- well, it don't get much better than that.

I would take them (her) something from the U.S., since you are visiting. On the Paternal side, I would go for either an assortment of items (not too expensive) such as a keychain, beer mug with a U.S. flag on it, etc. (get the idea?). On the Maternal side, well, that would be left up to you (maybe the same?).

Something from your own country/state. Perhaps a coffee table type of photo book about where you live or something traditionally made in your country/state.
