1. Don't go on about the accent or about "down-under" From our point of view, the USA and Europe are down under. You have an accent - we don't.
2. Don't go driving in the real outback unless you know what you are doing and carry water, fuel and equipment like a second spare wheel. You will not get these with hire cars. Yes, you really can die of thirst and exposure.
3. Don't expect the same foods you see at home. Australian beer is stronger than American and some British beer.
4. Snakes, spiders, jellyfish and some fish are dangerous and deadly. Large male kangaroos are dangerous rather than cute, so are the rare large flightless birds, cassowarys (have crests on the head).
5. There is little danger from sharks or crocodiles if you use your head. Crocodiles will attack out of water though. There is more chance of you being run down on the roads. We drive on the left. Don't forget that.
6. Don't expect business people to accept your home currency. They won't. They will accept Mastercard, Visa, Diners etc.
7. Lifesavers in Australia put flags on surf beaches to show where the surf is safest and the area that is watched and patrolled. Don't swim outside the line of these flags.
8. Don't big-note yourself.
9. Don't forget the hat and sunscreen
10. Don't neglect to have a good time.
11. Don't believe stories about drop-bears.

1) Don't pronounce Brisbane as "Brisbay-ne".... it's "Brisbn"!!
2) Don't whinge about how hot / humid / windy it is
3) Don't throw litter anywhere except in the bin (geez I hate that). This is Australia, not northern England!!
4) Don't hitch a ride in the outback ;-)
5) Don't leave the flyscreen door open
6) Don't knock Vegemite. We like it, we don't care if you don't.
7) Don't give the indigenous people booze / cigarettes / money
8) Don't buy those crappy painted plywood boomerangs they sell in souvenier shops. Or hats with dangly corks.
9) Don't come to a BBQ empty handed. Bring a slab of beer at least. And ice.
10) Don't go to Adelaide. It's crap.
11) Don't forget to leave before your holiday visa expires......

I went there over 10 years ago and have to say it was one of the best adventures of my life. I'm sure things have changed. I can't think of many things I would not do, but here are 3.
1. Don't by opals in Adelaida.
2. Don't stay in a 2 flag hotel in Alice Springs.
3. Don't order Mexican food. They don't have a clue about what real a real Mexican meal is like.
