You might see fancy foreign posters of people drinking "Martini." This is a brand of vermouth and there are a lot of brands of it today. It's a secret blend of cheap wine, herbs, and little extra alcohol for kick. Mix a little vermouth with gin and add a green olive to get the mixed drink "a martini". Let me warn you that most people do not like straight gin, or the potent mixed drink of mostly gin, but it does look really cool in a martini glass. The martini was most popular during prohibition when people liked their drinks really strong. Recipes called for less and less vermouth to the point of "let the shadow of the vermouth bottle fall on the gin." If you are in Europe, especially Italy, you may see Martini on the menu as an aperitif. If you want a light one I would recommend Cinzano Rosso - it is sweet and light.

There are many recipes for martinis these days due to an enormous surge in their popularity. The classic martini is made with 1 part dry vermouth (I recommend Martini & Rossi) and two parts gin (I recommend Bombay Sapphire). If you like a dry martini put two drops of dry vermouth in the chilled martini glass, swish it around until it coats the glass, then dump it out. Pour a shot of gin into a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake it until ice forms on the outside of the shaker. Strain into chilled martini glass. Add three olives. Volia! A perfect dry, shaken, not stirred Martini. You can use vodka instead of gin if you so desire. If you want a dirty martini just pour a little olive juice into the chilled martini glass.

A standard martini is vodka/gin and dry vermouth. Some people when requesting an 'extra-dry' martini prefer whiskey in place of of vermouth.
The wine part you're refering to is what vermouth is made of - a fortified wine flavored with herbs - tastes crisp/sharp.

original martini is made with gin , but vodka can be used
chill martini glass add vermouth, swish vermouth around martini glass remove excess vermouth, most customers wanna see u chill the gin or vodka and do this big show where u put it in a shaker tin and shake the hell out of it but i dont think thats a good idea i think just stirring it in a glass with ice is enough then strain into martini glass

Martini means two different things.
"Martini" means a brand of vermouth, a wine-based drink from Italy. It comes in red and white varieties, and also in sweet or dry.
"A Martini" means a cocktail made from a mixture of gin and vermouth (which may be Martini vermouth or some other brand such as Cinzano).
A Dry Martini means a martini cocktail that has more gin than vermouth.

It is made with a combination of either vodka or gin. It can be mixed with different alcohol's to make different tyhpes of martinis, or use flavored vodka's. I do not believe that there is such a martini as a "light" one, as it is made totally out of hard liquor.
