When the soil is dry and it is very hot, how can a plant reduce its water loss?

1) Reduce surface area. Thick, narrow leaves have a lower surface to volume ratio than broad flat leaves.

2) Develop a tough, waxy exterior layer that has few pores - this reduces the rate of evaporation.

3) Interior texture is less woody contains highly hydrophilic (water-binding) substances to store water and limit the amount accessible to the surface. This texture is called 'succulent.'

Plants reduce water loss by shedding their leaves during hot season (like autumn). Also in deserts plants protect their water stored in their stems by means of sharp and long spines - Cactus is an excellent example. Also waxy leaves are another means to prevent excessive water loss
