Electronics like mobile phones and video cameras are cheaper in your home country.
Swimwear and clothes are quite cheap. The problem is that the larger sizes are not easy to find. It may be necessary to have them tailor made, which is still cheaper than off the shelf in your home country.
The cheapest shopping is in Bangkok at MBK or Chatachuk Markets.

Anything you find in Koh Samuai will be just as, if not more expensive than at home. Phuket will not be much better in all honestly. These places are pure and simple tourist towns, and everything is priced accordingly. You may do ok with Swimwear and clothes, depending on your bargaining skills you may even get a half way decent deal.

As far as Mobile phones and video cameras, I wouldn't waste your money; get it at home for the same price, and you'll have a valid warranty.

If you're really looking for a bargain, you'd be better off looking in Bankok. I'd say you'd be able to find the items cheaper there, but it's not worth a trip to bangkok just for that. Have fun and good luck!

Hi mate, where you are heading is more known for its waters and beaches. Electronics are actually more expensive in Thailand because of import duties imposed by the government. The only time they will be cheap if they are made in Thailand! And you know this is not likely, for now.

In fact, like the other posters, electronics are much cheaper in Oz. Especially if you get them from warehouses with as much as 20-30% off the market price.

For clothes, this will be in Bangkok, where there is a wholesale center. Keep this in mind for your next visit, to stop by Bangkok if you can.

Meanwhile, just relax and bum around the beautiful scenery in Phuket and Koh Samui.

Phones? reasonable... not too sure about the prices
Swimwear - girls, I paid about 350 baht for two bathing suits.
clothes - pretty reasonable except for the billabong stuff (made in china; expensive... made in thailand; reasonable)
video camera; not too sure

the electronics were tough... you had to really know what you were looking for and when you did find it, the price difference wasn't that dramatic.

try get down to the weekend market.
