I want to bring both beer and liquor into Canada from Australia, and am trying to figure out the rules for it....has anyone brought in a combination of both. I know it can be either 1.14L of Spirits OR 8.5L of Beer...so if I brought in a 700ml bottle of spirits (representing 61.4% of the full amount) could I then bring in 3.2L of beer (38.6% of the beer amount). So in other words a 700ml spirit and a 6 pack?

No, it is EITHER the spirits OR the beer (OR 1.5 L of wine). However from my American lover's continued experiences I would speculate that for you as a foreigner, unlike Canadian citizens on which Canada Customs tends to strictly enforce duties payments, you will probably be granted leniency should you come with both some spirits and beer if the amounts are no more than the limit for each.

Much of the budgets for Canada's provinces is paid for by high alcohol taxes (like in Scandinavia) so Customs is diligent about them.

Do yourself a favor and stop at the Duty-Free store between the American and Canadian border. Since its not technically on either country's soil, all alcohol there is tax-free (super cheap).

Border Patrol often tends to be more lenient with any alcoholic beverages purchased here since it doesn't risk any kind of international customs issues.

I don't think you'll have any problem bringing it in.. just stick the bottle in your checked luggage and they probably won't even notice it :) Beer is awfully heavy to fly with though...

But what are you planning on bringing? I hope it's some true Aussie specialty, because believe it or not we do have liquor here :)
