If what he said about himself was reported accurately, then it does matter whether or not he is God. If he is, then what he said was true and there is hanging over all our heads the destination of Hell. I don't typically talk about Hell, except your question seems to lead to that; there is a definite difference between those who decide not to trust him, that those that do.
So it matters to me, and I was given the ability to respond to him. Many do not respond to him in that way. I don't know that much about heaven, but I know enough to not want to go to hell. Jesus said that if we trust him, we can be with him instead.

But there's a huge difference between DOING and BEING. That's why the Bible teaches that salvation is by grace alone through Jesus, not by anything we do (Ephesians 2:8-9). As for what the Bible says about Jesus being God, there's no way to deduce from Scripture that Jesus ISN'T God. The first set of links below should help. Its all a matter of faith. Them who have ears let them hear, them who have eyes let them see. Jesus is one part of the holy trinity, The Father, The Son and the Holy Ghost are one. As before time began, now and forever. I believe that Jesus is God who came to earth died on a cross to pay our sin debt and arose on the third day to be with the Father in heaven. Its a matter of election:
Jesus has a vote>
Devil has a vote.
You have a vote, it is going to be up to you to cast the deciding factor for your life.

first off jesus isnt god.
and the thing about jesus being in the bible is that we as people.. we are so closed minded that we need physical proof. and by incorporating jesus in the bible it does indeed show physical proof. even now there is more evidence to support that jesus was a real person vs. not.
and how in the world do you come to the conclusion that people were the same before and after jesus' life? i think the messages in the bible have indeed changed some people.. sometimes for the good and sometimes for the bad... i think indeed jesus' life and incorporating it in the bible has defiantly changed things.

It does matter. If Jesus were not a God how would we know the way to his Father? How would we know that we are forgiven? Can an ordinary human being forgive our sins?

lucky: It just gives more emphasis on God the Father's love for His Creation when one internalizes the fact that a Devine Creator would desire that His sole, only Son would divest Himself of His divinity and become like one of the boys, knowing all too well, that He would be lied about, slandered, falsely arrested, beaten to resemble hamburger meat, hung on on cross with nails driven through you and mocked to the point of death. Yep; He could of called the whole thing off because He was God in the flesh - but didn't !!! To the converted mind, the relationship only thrives !!!

It only matters if your concerned about your eternal destiny. Are you willing to stake your salvation on doubting without a firm foundation for this doubt? Jesus is the only one who bridges the gap between sinful humanity and a holy God.

Because many people, from a German chap in a white dress in Rome on down, have a vested interest in there being a particular god and people acting in a certain way as a a result of it.

He is my life. He's like that Evanescence song. "Bring me to Life" Except without all that emo stuff. It is important, for the Earth was never happier but to have His feet touch her. The stars never shone so brightly except to shine upon him. The sun burned mightily so that he might be warmed. The waves coalesced beneath to keep him up. He IS God, and He walked amoung us for a while, and He conquered death, so that we can know that there's more to this life than just what we can see.

Jesus said something to the effect of :All that i can do, you can do. (Sorry i have no Bible at hand, but trust me). Jesus did not claim to be a god. Jesus was a man, but that does not lower him in worth. The way to the divine is through MAN. God does not think like a human. If Jesus were a god, he would have healed many more people than he did and stopped the rape and murder of innocents.
