The "Chow Halls" operate every day, on every base. Junior enlisted men are provided 3 full meals a day if they want them (many go to subway, etc... on their own money). There is usually a midnight meal for those on shift work over night also.

The military provides meals for their folks. The Dining Facility (DFAC), which used to be known as the chow hall, serves breakfast (eggs, bacon, sausage, 'taters, fruit, etc), lunch and supper (regular and short order). This is provided free for active soldiers who do NOT have "Separate Rations". Separate Rations is money provided to soldiers who cannot, for whatever reason, eat in the chow hall on a regular basis. This money is provided so they can buy something to eat while they are performing their mission. If a soldier wants to eat in the DFAC, and is on separate rations, then he/she pays for the meal. Lunch and supper cost $3.65. I don't know for sure what the breakfast cost (it's been awhile), but I don't think that it's over $2.50.

Absolutely. It is one of the obligations the military commits to in providing for its members. In a combat zone the meals are free to all members. In non combat areas such as CONUS (the US) officers have to pay to eat in the DFACs...at least I did when I served.

Yep....junior enlisted eat at the dining facilities. Other soldiers are allowed to eat there as well on occassion...My husband doesnt eat there, of course, so he gets sperate rations to cover the cost of his meals. The army makes sure that the basic needs of the soldier are covered, at no cost to him or her. That includes medical care, dental, meal, housing. The service members responsibility to care for his family.

If there is a mess hall where they are stationed the army assumes they eat there. If there isn't, they are given extra pay (not a whole lot) to buy their meals elsewhere.

Um, of course they do. Why wouldn't they? It's called a "chow hall" for a reason. Ask anyone about DFAC.

Of course, but it gets deducted from your pay monthly if you use it. It's simply called the DFAC or Dining Facility.
