I actually DON'T like Sony digicams because they are expensive and lots of the accessories (ie mem cards) are proprietary (only work with Sony products).
I like Canon, Nikon, and Olympus. It really depends on what your goals are. If you are just taking pics for e-mail and quick posting to the Internet, then you don't very high resolution, only about 4 or 5 megapixels, at most. If you are just a casual, amateur photographer, then ignore all the fancy manual features. About the only feature that is important for everyone is zoom. But ignore DIGITAL zoom; that is worthless. Look for OPTICAL zoom.
When you read reviews, make sure you check out numbers on usability features. For example, I hate that my camera takes so friggin long to start up (probably 5 seconds??) and takes so friggin long between each shot (maybe another 3 seconds).
Think about how you will be using the camera and what is important to you.

2 things to be noted when buying a digital camera are:
1) Optical Zoom 2) Resolution (how many Mega Pixels)
In market today, a 12x optical zoom camera with 5MP is available for less than 250USD. Sony DSC H1 or Canon S2 are available good cameras. Never opt for digital zoom because, any amount of digital zoom can be obtained after transferring the pictures into a computer. Optical Zoom should be more and the resolution also should be more. Resolution does matter a lot when taking a paper print of the picture taken.

You've already read the reviews, so I'll just put in a vote here.
If I had a $250 budget for a camera AND memory card, I'd buy either a Canon SD600 or Canon A540. The SD600 is small and stylish (maybe too small for some) and the A540 lets you control the shutter speed and lens opening, if you choose to.
There you go.

The Canon SD600 is a very good camera. I bouught my daughter for Christmas a Fugi FinePix S5200. She loves it. Takes excellent 8X10s when enlarged. Has 5 megapixels and 10x optical zoom. I paid $238+ memory card. My own camera I wouldn't trade for anything is the Sony CyberShot DSC-H2. A bit more than $250 can be bought for $300. 6 MP, 12Xoptical zoom, excellent 8X10s, great on batteries, comes with batteries and charger, also has image stabilzer.

Canon SD 600.
this is really good... it has Lithium Ion Rechargable battery... which makes it easier for travelling and taking as many as you want...
however you need a memory card to store many pics... If you buy a 1GB SD card thats enough for the as you can take around 200 - 300 pics with highest resolution...
this camera is 6Mega Pixel and 3X Optical zoom. Quality of the pics are really good...
Other model I would recommend is Sony W50.. even this model is really good... this is has similar features as of canon SD 600. You can buy any one of these... just find the best price
for best deals in these...
then you can visit...

www.compusa.com
they give out great deals... i have taken a SD600 for $250 + taxes

Go to the shop & try a couple of different brands within your budget.
Ask the salesperson if you can print a couple of photos taken with different cameras & then let your results & feelings decide.
Ultimately it will be a decision from the heart its your emotions that will decide. Good luck & enjoy the results.
