If enough weight is transferred to the rear wheels during acceleration it will cause the front wheels to lift. You can see this action at any stop sign. When a car moves forward at lower acceleration rates you will see the front end raise slightly as the rear end of the vehicle settles.

A drag car is designed to carry the front wheels. It is a combination of weight transfer and accerlation. The cars are designed to transfer as much weight as possible to the rear wheels for better traction off the line. The more traction helps reduce wheel spin which in turn lowers the elapsed time.

Oatmeal has the best answer but, I should add that some of us just like to show off. I have been known to adjust the 4 link and move some weight to put it on its bumper for a good photographer!!!!!!!!
