From what I remember, and please correct me if I am wrong, Christ said that there were two commandments. Love God and love your neighbour as yourself.
This second, to me, is the essence of Christianity - love, tolerance, acceptance, learning. If Christians followed those principles it would be remarkable. I have met a few Christians who do follow those principles and wonderful people they are too.
Unfortunately, many of the so-called Christians around, and there are many on Y!A, propose hatred, bigotry, intolerance, xenophobia, ignorance - all the attributes one would not expect in a Christian.

Why are you asking an atheist this question? They don't have a clue as to what a true Christian is. You should be asking that question to a true born again Christian such as myself. I'd be more than happy to answer it for you since I've been a born again Christian for almost five years now. Anyone who is born again like myself would surely know the meaning of what a true Christian is - not an atheist.

Anybody who believes that Jesus is God - from Hitler to Mother Teresa. There is no such thing as a "Christian act. Good people do good things, bad people do bad things - religion (or lack thereof) is irrelevant.

To me, I view someone as a true christian when they follow the teachings of their appointed lord and savior, Jesus Christ. I've done enough bible study to know that Jesus commanded his followers not to be judgmental, to love everyone as you love yourself, and not to be caught up in earthly possessions or worldly desires. I could really care less what the rest of the bible says. If you follow Jesus, base your life on the teachings of Jesus. Jesus never enumerated the types of people who were going to hell, he said that we're all worthy of forgiveness. I think if you put aside of the teachings of the guy your religion is named after just to have an excuse not to like someone -- the greatest example being gay people -- then you aren't a real christian. I think lots of modern day christians start confusing the words of Paul with the words of Jesus. Study your religion, and follow what your master says.
By the way, Summer Breeze -- I don't think that the questioner seriously expects most atheists to understand what it means to be a real christian to you. However, considering that many atheists are quick to point out how unchristian like a person's attitude or words are, the questioner wanted an atheist's perspective on what should define a real christian. Its a question about perception, dear ... not necessarily about facts.

A Christian is someone who follows the teachings of Christ (Jesus). So most Christians ask themselves, "What would Jesus do?" In my opinion, I think that atheists are people that are just really pissed off at God. Most of the time, Jesus taught in parables. If you read His teachings, you will find them to be increadibly wise and timeless.
