What the heck is wrong with our world when a convicted child molester gets less time in jail then a petty theif. A molester MIGHT get 6 months and a petty theif can get up to 5 years? then the molester is out on the street and has little involvement with their parole officer, the regisrty hardly ever knows where they are and it seems NO ONE is doing anything about this. Am I the only person disgusted by this?

No, you're not the only one. I'm a foster parent and I know what types of things people can do to kids. It's a sad fact that children are not protected the way they should be. I keep up with the CT registry of sexual offenders and it sicken me how many live right next door. They live and work next to schools and parks and are free after only a year or two. It is disgusting.!!

I'm not sure where you're getting your information, but it's not accurate... well... in terms of general information, it's not, anyway.

Petty theft is, by definition, petty... meaning, pettite... or small. In CA a petty theft is a misdemeanor, so holds a 1-year maximum county jail sentence. However, someone with a history of multiple offenses will have much more jail time hanging over their head than someone who's just a first-time petty thief.

Sex offenses are typically felonies, so hold prison sentences of greater than 1 year. Some less aggregious sex offenses may be misdemeanors (less than 1 year in County Jail)... The sentence allowed by law is a "maximum" sentence available. Probation will recommend a sentence to the Court, if asked... and the Court will sentence the offender appropriately, based on the information it has. If it's a first time offense and not overly aggregious, the person may end up with a short jail sentence and then be on probation.

There are just too many factors to consider when making sentencing recommendations... no way can I explain it all here. Suffice to say, you don't have all the information.

It is something that has been wrong for a long time. Stealing something only has a monetary value, but a child being molested can scar them for life and the damage that is caused can not have a price attached to it. It is something that sticks with them forever.

Child molesters should absolutely be punished more. It doesn't make it better, but child molesters get the living cr** beat out of them when they are in jail and some don't even make that short prison term because the other criminals kill them.

I think you need to research each individual case to understand everything about the judicial system. Yes, it may be true that a petty thief can get five years, but they can get 6 months parole also. No jail time. If a person is convicted of CHILD MOLESTATION, he can get up to 25 years in prison. And the life of a child molester in prison is a living hell. So you can be disgusted, you can be outraged, at individual cases, but for the most part, I think the system is doing OK. Not perfect, but OK.

Many times property crimes are punished more severely than other crimes however child molestation has always been taken seriously....once it is proved. Therein stands the distinction. It used to be very hard for many to understand that someone could do such a heinous act therefore a great many molesters were free simply because "proof" was not attainable.

These days, as with other violent sex offenses, there is a great deal of time and money spent to assure the prosecution of offenders.

The world is a vast place, with many children unprotected. Due to aggressive prosecution of child predators, many predators are seeking children from other countries that are not as "wise".

A very serious matter to be sure.

Why don't you get involved? Contact a local agency and volunteer your time. Political action is needed.

Think globally. Act locally.

Peace.

but child molesters have a psychological disease and they cant help themselves. they need treatment and counseling. Just ask hillary and bill, he did pardon 2 convicted sex offenders who had been sentenced to life in prison. now why would he have done that if they were evil. and besides if it were evil then why would we allow an organization like NAMBLA to continue to exist. (i am being sarcastic and am in favor of just handing convicted child molesters over to the big boys in the prison yard and letting them do whatever they want to the Chomo's it would not be pretty.)

I would say,if i ran government,to change to sex offenders law to a maximum of life in prison without parole or even death. Add to this list anyone who abuses the elderly and you got a better system. Me personally i would bring back either hanging or the firing squad for any of those people but thats just me.

The system is disgustingly unfair.

I can't even come up with a cynical reason for the madness.

In Illinois, murderers have been out of jail in less than 5 years,
whereas drug dealers can get life!

I agree. The system is extremely unfair. If you get molested, you will have gone through a traumatic experience.
