It solely depends on the lighting of the room. I have black marble in my bathrooms and for my bar. It looks great. I put in black composite (solid surface), in my kitchen and it also looks great, My kitchen is brushed stainless appliances, red cherry wood cabinets, and the black countertops.

I work for a granite distributor and the major complaint I hear on dark, polished counters is that every fingerprint and smudge shows. People are constantly complaining about having to wash their counters three or four times a day. Maybe go with a honed finish to cut down on the fingerprints.

Hard to keep clean, and depending on the material, the polished surface is easily ruined. Do you mean granite by any chance? those work pretty well, the flecks of other colors make it look better and it will stand up to allot. the fake kind won't.

I would think that the black would show water spots etc, and that the polished surface might be easily scratched and therefore ruined. I think a colored granite would be nice.

Black polished granite is great, super tough and easy to maintain. Not cheap, but well worth the extra money. (Black marble is terrible!)

Had dark sinks installed. In areas where we have hard water, the water spots were ugly. Rinse hands and sinks looked yuk.
Black will show every waterspot, every everything. Very elegant, very hard to care for.
