First off, no you can't get a Visa on-line but you can download an application form.

Which city?
It depends on what you do for a living. I find that certain regions in Canada specialize in certain aspects of jobs. I recommend anywhere in "The Golden Horseshoe" of Ontario (Toronto, Mississauga, Hamilton, Guelph, Kitchener, Waterloo). It has the most plentiful and vast variety of jobs available. It's also the most populated area in Canada where there will be so many people you can socialize with to gain friends and information on just about anything. Some places are more friendly than others but can be easily won over with a great attitude.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Toronto - is the most expensive city in Canada; rated 47th in the world in 2006, up from 82nd in 2004. Almost all major Canadian cities cost of living continues to increase as minimum wages increases only $0.25/ year and factory jobs either stay the same or actually have fallen by about $3 down to $13/hr.

Toronto has over 600,000 Italians making it the largest Italian population outside of Italy, 1.2 million Chinese (and growing), along with Greek, Portuguese (+Brazilian), Jamaican, and so on. The job market is as diverse as its population ranging from high-end office work to factory to low paying grunt work. Plenty of office real estate and high volume of traffic to start your own business as well. If you have a good business idea, you can easily make it.

The secret to success is to have a great command of the English language both written and oral to compete with the numerous and unqualified people in the job market (due to high immigration). This is not politically incorrect. Customer service is the weakest I have seen anywhere in Canada. Diversity is also this regions greatest weakness as so many immigrants refuse to adopt the Canadian way of life and continually "stick with their own kind".

* Mississauga - is like Toronto but much slower pace. Its the city of Toronto thats geared towards family life. Lots of clean parks, recreation, and shopping malls; and like Toronto, its very expensive. Because the property tax is so high in Toronto, many businesses are moving into Mississauga, Guelph and Kitchener along with high-paying jobs. Lots of Polish, Croatian, and Italian populations. Lots of diversity, not as much as Toronto.

* Guelph - is very beautiful and clean. The city caters to family life and transportation to Toronto as many people have sold properties from Toronto and moved to Guelph which at that time some 10 years ago, was much cheaper. The cost of living here and working in Toronto is not worth it unless you really like the slow family life. For a young guy...its boring in Guelph and often you will find going to Hamilton and Mississauga for fun. No diversity.

* Kitchener - is connected to Waterloo and Cambridge making it a Tri-City with a population of about 600,000 spread out in a vast area. Its a very mundane city (maybe because I lived there for 25 years). Job market is fair, very slow-paced, scenery is not as nice as Guelph, lots of factory job losses because of the failing auto sector. Becoming more and more of a white collar town and almost completely losing its German heritage. Lots of small pockets of diversity, German/Dutch, Greek, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, and others.

* Waterloo - If you want to have fun, most people will end up in Waterloo where two major universities are located. As such, Waterloo is one of the cheapest places to live in the Golden Horseshoe but remains a blue collar town that is dying by the year. Its downtown core is very old English/Irish and dying as well.

As for Cambridge - it sucks! Nothing to do, no jobs but dying auto factory work... don't much care to continue.

* Hamilton - very fun place to visit..would never want to live there. Very high pollution, blue collar town, and lots of Serbian people.
ha ha ha... I don't care.

* Ottawa - outside the Horseshoe but a city worth mentioning. Very white collar town, most people say to me that its boring and nothing to do, but I disagree. Ottawa has lots to do if you are the type of person to continually educate yourself. Not everything in life is thrill-seeking. It is a super quiet and super clean city that takes pride and care of its presence to the world. The people in Ottawa are very nice and truly multicultural, not like Toronto were they say that they are multicultural but keep to their own groups and have parades on just about every single denomination there is to mankind. In Ottawa, you are just you.

The summers are very beautiful and the winters are very unforgiving... but with global warming that might be changing.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Out west - forget about it! It is Cold. Cold like you never known before in your life! High paying jobs because of the boom but that will soon end...my God man, its cold.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BC - I heard its very nice and expensive. Weather is like England, cold and damp. Summers are amazing. But thats what I heard.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quebec - I would like to visit that country some day. lol. Very nice, but very divided from the rest of Canada because of the separatist party (the Bloc Quebecois). You also need a strong command of the Quebec-French language (as opposed to the actual French language).

I hope you found this a bit informational as well as enjoyable to read. The very best of luck to you.

I've lived in Western Canada my whole life. It depends what you like. Calgary is a nice safe city with the mountains surrounding it and a stampede every year, I loved it. Vancouver was like a paradise (but really rainy in the winter). You can make tons of $$$$ in Fort McMurray (oil city) if you can find a cheap place to live but the winters last forever, there is nothing to do, and many people are messed up and miserable. I hear that Montreal is wonderful for culture. I hear that there is not much in Saskatchewan or Manitoba so don't go there (I apologize if anyone feels differently) BC is beautiful and Alberta has all the money. I hear the East Cost is pretty nice too. Good Luck.

I have traveled, camped and had business dealing throughout Canada. Beautiful country. If I would move there it would be to BC...Vancouver; love Lake Louise and Baniff. Next to Montreal...great historic city but my French is non-existent....and if I had the $$$ I would live on the eastern side; Prince Edward Island.

Calgary is nice...more like the SW US but great country.

NOTE: While mithril (above respondent) is probably correct in general about American adaptability...I have lived in a couple of different counties and always enjoyed it. But a lifelong change of residency....she may be correct.

I urge you to think twice about this. Americans find it difficut to adjust to life in different countries. It is not what you are used to.
