What medical science tells us is that there is a spectrum of fertility. A woman who has a 28 day cycle (28 days from first day of period to first day of next period) is most likely to ovulate on day 14. Because sperm can last as long as five days, the five days before that are high fertility, and because the egg takes several days to travel from ovary to the uterus, add five days after that. So the highest chances of getting pregnant are from day nine after you start the period, to day 19.

The human body is such a huge variable, however, that women don't always have a 28 day cycle, sometimes they ovulate early or later than the norm, and it is ALWAYS possible to get pregnant when having sex. Doesn't matter when or what type of birth control you are using, having sex gives you the chance of getting pregnant. It is VERY rare to get pregnant during the period, because that is when the lining is actually sloughing off, but even then, it has happened.

You're best bet would be to abstain from sex until you are ready to have children. Barring that, use both the pill and a condom for protection from pregnancy and STD's.

Since the first day of a menstrual cycle is hard to predict, I suggest you stick with the four days after her period. A woman is safe those days considering that the endometrial lining had slough off (manifested through mentruation) and there's no way implantation is possible.
