Through this forum, I noticed many asker like U is either ignorance or had obtained distorted and misleading information about Islam and Muslims. I think there is something that is taught to feel negative or provide negative information about Islam / Muslims. To answer your question, U must realise that reading is the fundamental factor of understanding. If U could not read, then your understanding will be very limited. As such, the Muslims were taught to recite the Quran before understanding the content and Islam. Thus, indirectly Islam also tell the worshippers to understand the meaning of the content in the Quran through the ability of reading the Quran..

Good Question!

Primo, the majority of the Sunnah are non-Arabic and don't understand a word of what they're saying; but just say it, because that's what they've been taught to do????

Secundo, the Qua'ran is not all that "unchanged" as the Muslims would like to claim it is! How can you explain the burning of all but his "official" version by Caliph Omar???? And, for that matter the differences in the Shia, Ahmediyya, Sufi etc versions with the Sunnis???? Or, even for that matter, the fact that only the Wahabi version of the Sunni Qua'ran is allowed into Mecca and Medina????

Terrio, To claim that all the Sunnah really understand and follow the Qua'ran would be totally wrong! How, then, can you explain the misleading of the poor suicide bombers by their mullahs and Imams???? Or the violence that's unleashed by the Imams saying it's the Will of God???? Of the Sunni killing Shia, Sufi and all other denominations of Islam????

Quarto et finalmente, Where does the Qua'ran and Shari'a allow the questioning of the Word of the Qua'ran???? That's punishable by Death!?!?

All the best!

Cheers!

Most Muslims can recite in arabic, read the translation and understand its meaning thru religious classes. Muslims read the Quran themselves with addition to religious classes and sermons. Unlike other religions, most of their believers did not read themselves but depend on their preacher to read to them and tell them their meanings.
We have thousands in the world who can recite by heart since the Prophet Muhammad. Can you tell me any one from your religion who can recite by heart a religious book as condensed as the Al-Quran. Bring us your proof.

I thought that the goal of the memorization and recitation was understanding. I may be wrong though.

The understanding of a religious doctrine is not equal to the finding of the truth when the understanding is conditional to a belief.

Says who??!!!

We were ordered to understand, analyze, interpret, think thouroughly and apply every word and every clear, as well as hidden, judgements in the Quran and act upon em!
As Omar Ibn El Khatab said, they never memorise a new verse unless they totally comprehend and apply the last verse they memorised!

Anyone who takes the time to memorize the Qur'an understands its meaning. Can you memorize the Bible and not, over time, begin to understand it? I doubt it.
