Hi, on my cats back he seems to have an area that bothers him. I'm not sure if it's dry skin or something else, but there are alot of white flakes around that area and he hates to be brushed or touched in that area. He actually sometimes bites if you touch, rub, or try to brush his fur in that area. Any ideas on what this could be and what maybe I could do to help him?? The vet just tells me it's dry skin and to give him fish oil. Please help. His skin is not red or looks irritated so I'm confused on what's going on. There's just flakes and the fur seems a little stiff. Thanks

It could be an allergic reaction (to fleas or something else), ringworm, mange or a skin infection among other things. Has the vet done any diagnostic testing yet? If not, it may be time for a return visit.

Try a Micanazole Nitrate or a Clotrimazole preparation. Apply a bit of this on the skin gently about two or three times a day fro 3 days. Discontinue if there is no improvement else, continue for at least a week.

Did the vet shave the area and look at the skin? Flakes usually means something that responds to medicine for athlete's foot, but be careful if the cat licks the area. The fish oil sounds right, but I would change your cat food, if you haven't already, and get one with a high percent of Taurine. If the cat gets too fat or too thin, get him checked for thyroid. If he gets lethargic, get him checked for Diabetes.

My cat had that too and I gave her cod liver oil in her food and also changed from cheap food to something with more substance and less filler. If you go to your pet store and get someone that is knowledgable about pet food they could tell you a good brand to put your cat on. Also if you get fish flavoured cat food it tends to have more omega-3s in it and that helps the skin too. Nutrience is the food i found to be best for my cat, I'm from Canada though so if you are in the states i'm not sure if you can get it there

I suspect it's demodex or microscopic fleas. The area sometimes goes bald and won't heal overtime. It is usually a round patch of rough surface. It can't be healed by medicinal soap. Bring him to a good vet for injection and he will also give you a (Amitraz)bath for him. Please be cautioned that demodex is transferrable to humans too. These fleas are not visible with the human eye.
