If it were me, I'd appreciate someone buying me a round of golf or a gift certificate to a pro shop. And a golf shirt or hat would be nice.
Lessons might be a little akward. If you don't know the game, you may not understand his skill level or who should be teaching him. And beer money for getting drunk on the course is just tacky.

Get him a gift certificate for golf lesson/lessons. Every golfer needs a lesson. Whether he's great, not so great, or somewhere in between it doesn't matter. Even Tiger Woods has a swing coach. A lesson learned will last a lifetime.Check with a local course or driving range or check the PGA website to locate a teaching professional. Buying him a round at a great course might be a nice gift, but then his friends might have to pony up alot of money as well, which they might not be willing to do. Don't buy him clubs or balls or gadgets. If he wanted them, he would have bought them. If you don't get exactly what he uses, there is a chance the gift would go unused.

I am a golf fanatic, and the one gift that I really want to get, but would never spend the money for is a GPS golf course guide. They run from about $300 to $450, but they super sweet for knowing the exact yardage for any hole, at any point of the golf course. I thinkk that there is a monthly fee that I would gladly pay, if someone got me the unit. I will only spend the money myself when they come out with a unit that keeps track of all of your scores and runs an average handicap, so you can see your improvement.

A round for two at a nice course in your area. Throw in an extra $20 for spending money for the beverage girl as he can actually legally purchase beers from her now. Of course, if he hasn't been smuggling refreshments onto courses before now, then he's been missing out. Finish off the golf gift with a Maker's Mark cigar. That should make for a great golf outing.

I am always asked what I want for gifts and my answer is always the same - golf balls. Every golfer needs them. Some golfers may be real picky about the brand -lots of hot shots play only Titleist Pro-v 1, which run about $4-5 apiece, but my favorite ball is the one I get for free at Christmas.

I would stay away from buying him equipment. That's something he'll want to do himself. Is he happy with his game? (Most of us aren't). Lessons is a great gift because it's something most golfers only think about. If he's an enthusiast as I am, nothing beats raising your skill level. Also consider golf clothing or a rain suit. I love getting new golf shirts.

If he is a golf enthusiast and avid player there are many options. One of them is to look at his golf bag and see if he is about out of golf balls and what kind of golf ball he plays with. He may need more of them. More and more golf courses are requiring a dress code to play there . If he plays at one of those, find out what is required there to play golf there. You might be able to get him a gift certificate that allows him to play 18 holes at his favorite course.

It depends on how much you're looking to spend. I'm sure you can get a little gift pack with like a divot replacer, ball marker, etc... on the cheap, if you're looking to spend a little more, maybe go with some balls or even a club. Some places will offer monogrammed stuff, so maybe that could add a little touch of thought to it.
