Since software was in existence. Let's say from the early 80's approximately.

Since IBM allowed an open architecture for its chip, PC clones sprouted everywhere, and that created the software market. Software will continue in greater sophisticated eye catching and memory gobbling form until somebody ultimately pulls the plug. The party can't last forever.

It's not so much a software boom as a software "age". Ever since computers became popular software has been big business. As such, it will continue to grow and prosper.
