Our cat insits upon meowing throughout the house at 5:00am. Besides locking her away (too sweet a kitty to do that), does anyone have any humane ideas?

I agree about not locking her up! & if you close the door, there would be even more yowling since cats HATE closed doors. If she were in heat, she wouldn't just meow at 5:00a! If her water dish is full, & she has food, that's not the reason. Someone here said something about fresh food, so true. I fill my kitty's dish w/a quarter cup of dry food in the morning & let her nibble all day. But if there's any left by evening, forget it! She'll just sit by the dish & stare at me until I throw it out & get "fresh." I give her her moist food at night, (they really need both, which you probably know), & put it on a tray with fresh water on my bed! (It's queen size.) One thing you might try, is to give her some good play time before bedtime. I know cats are spposed to be nocturnal, but my kitty sleeps under the covers wth me all night. One of the cute things she does, is if after the alarm goes off, & I don't get up, she comes right up & sticks her nose IN my ear & says: "Ne-OW!" I was just thinking if she got lots of exercise late evenng, she might be more inclined to sleep. Cats pick up on their people companion's habits very well. She knows my ritual, & jumps on the bed where I stroke her awhile with a back scratcher! & then burrows under the covers, & neither of us moves all night. Can't think of anything else! It's about time for her to come in here anyway, & remind me I'm up too late. Good luck--& I'm glad you're not shutting out kitty! Oh. By the way, the water spray isn't a solution, really. There's some REASON why she's doing this, & you don't want to punish her, but figure out what the "problem" is.

I have the same problem. 5 a.m every morning, but tonight he woke me up at 3,30!
I usually have to get up and let my family sleep so I stay in the living room with him meowing playing noisily until, it's 7. He falls asleep and I wake up the rest of the family. I wish he could talk. What's on their mind when they meow like that?
I decided that tonight he and his pal (I got 2 cats but the other is an angel) will have his litter box moved to the living room, and we will sleep sound behind two doors!! Try. I won't put him in a small room alone. I keep the bedroom, he keeps the rest!
Good luck!

Feed her. Cat's have a different biological clock then us, they are normally (if wild) nocturnal, so it is not unusual for cats to want to be fed then. If you've tried that and you have a large area with litter box and food/water, putting them in it is not cruel. If she is an outdoor cat, letting her out would be good too. Also, make sure that she has easy access to the litter box.
My cats do that every morning, and it is just cause that's when they are hungry after a night of prowling for hair elastics and the elucid stray sock.

Get a spray bottle from your local hardware store and fill with water. Keep it by your bed. When kitty starts meowing at 5 AM, give him/her a squirt.

Works for other misbehavior too, like scratching on furniture. :-)

I think this will work. If not, get back with us or make a call to your veterinarian for advice.

Try a bowl of dry cat food left out all night so she can eat whenever she wants..My cats do not like dry food that has been left out 24 hours..so every morning the old is dumped and fresh put out..you could do this @ night.good luck..

If she hasn't been spayed, try that. Also, getting her shots may calm her down some, allowing her to sleep more at night.

My cat used to keep us up all night, but once she was spayed and got her shots, she generally sleeps through the night.

Good luck with your kitty!

dont feed her to keep her quiet as you are feeding her bad habit. A water squirter is a very useful tool at 5.00 in the morning (take it from me - I have two very naughty boys who do the same)

If she is coming into the bedroom carrying on, just close the door and refuse to give her any attention until it is time to wake up. Even a pat or a mutter is attention of some sort - THEY DONT CARE!

Be consistant and hopefully the nasty habit will stop in time.

Good luck

My cat does this also.
We think it's a way of her saying hello & good morning.
Lol, just give it some food (we give ours canned food) and it'll shut up for a while...
Or just play with a bit
It may want attention.....

My one cat does this because he has to pee and he refuses to use a litter box so he wants to go outside.
