It looks like spiral curls. You could actually wet your hair. Put some gel or mousse and twist it by grabbing about a one - two inch lock and from the top down. It works best with big twist instead of tiny twist. Put a rubberband in to hold it and sleep in it. The next morning you would just take the rubberbands out and run your fingers through it.

i use treseme' curl care mouse (while it's still wet), take a couple palms-fulls (2-3 max) scrunch it in and let it sit for a/b 5 mins then spray all over w/ treseme' hairspray (it's a big black can w/ green writing)... DON'T blow dry it b/c it will frizz.. but in a/b an hour or so it'll be dry and you'll have some nice soft curls (it won't be hard and stiff like some hairsprays or even gels)
