They are not using critical thinking when it comes to their own theistic religion anyway, people should always be taught how to think...instead they get taught what to think by those who wish to manipulate them, it's a very unfortunate situation and it cripples any real thought.
Religion can be used to hobble intellectual enquiry, it can be a time-waster on a grand scale, it keeps people in a child-like state and dependent on the religion...exactly as intended.

no but i think your avatar makes you look retarded.
"Do the majority of religious people just believe whatever story was hammered into their head first and not reality?"
majority of faith... thats hard to say... in my personal experience... NO. i find alot of people grow away from their childhood faith... although i am sure in different places it might be different.
"61-100% of religious people must be living according to an incorrect religion? If your religion because of your family, can u deny there is a >50% probability that u are wrong?"
how do you know that this religion is incorrect? how do they know they are right? no one knows, so dont state something as fact, if you cant prove it.
and as for me, being someone OF faith (not catholic) i can tell you right know that I DO believe in the possibility i might be wrong, and i accept that... do you?
"Could it be most religions, even if untrue, work GREAT to give young, lost & hopeless (1) role models, (2) instructions and (3) sense “I better be good”?"
yes it gives hope and love.. what the fudge is wrong with that? if something make people feel good and isnt hurting anyone.. then why not?

I think you know what your talking about and I agree to a certain extent, but I doubt it's that simple. What your saying is more than half the truth, but then you are faced with a bigger question. Why?.
I think the devoutly religious are more mentally ill than retarded. You should not get annoyed with them, try to help them. There just lost.
You should find the source of there conditioning and undermine it okay.
On a religious note, if you don't believe there is a Lord or a supernatural power with authority over us, then you are likely to be mentally retarded.
Check this out -
Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful.

Great question. I think you are being unfair with buddhists since it is a way of life (I am not a buddhist by the way) and not a religion. Just think of Jedis in star wars. Anyways, yes people are wrong. The question is why are you so mad about it? If someone is trying to make their world (and yours) better through religion don't get mad. I believe religion causes about 2 times the problems it solves, however without dumb people having a god with a paddle waiting for them when they die they would rape maim murder and destroy everything they could see because some people are animals. Without religion a lot would act on their more animalistic instincts. I think relgion is as a whole a bad idea but until people can accept the world for what it is and accept the fact that things don't happen for a reason or that god doen't have his hand in everything without rioting and murdering, let them have their golden calves. We will be ok without them but many off them can't and wouldn't be. and no most don't think about what they are doing it just makes sense to them. Ok I am done.

I would probably hesitate to say mentally retarded but some of the questions here...
Most people do believe in the faith of their parents and it is true that many of them have not read or studied any other religion. Of those that have, about half are reading through the lens of their childhood religion and it is meaningless. While statistically you are right, they will tell you there is no chance that they could be wrong. Some religions do provide models, instructions and a bit of morality but many leaders of the religions you listed use these things as weapons to gain control, money, power, and prestige. Sad but true. Even sadder, the people that need to hear and understand this can't.

No one is retarded for having faith in their religion. You seem to have an extreme anger towards anyone who is devoted to their religion, regardless of what their beliefs are. Why? It is not up to you do judge others based on their beliefs, and it is especially unacceptable to insult those who don't agree with you. For your last question, yes, I think religion is a great source of direction and guidance for anyone who seeks it. As far as which religion is true, that is a personal decision and I don't think anyone is wrong in whatever they choose. I think the most important thing in any religion is accepting that there is a higher power that deserves respect.

I protest!
You left out the Jewish population. I am not being racist here, but Judaism is a major world religion is it not? I wonder why there are no stats for this group.
You also left out the Sikhs.
You do not think that what Israel does in the Mid East especially to Palestine does not count?
Q1. Many do grow up and stay in the religion of their childhood, but there are many who leave and after some living and thought end up embracing another faith. They base their decisions on things that are none of your business.
Q2. Excuse me? Who are you to judge what is correct or incorrect for another human being?
Q3. Huh? oooh NOW I understand the Q. Your bad grammar had me confused for a few moments! But it is still not worth answering.
As for your reference to the mental condition of religious people around the world, I find your attitude arrogant and indicative of a small mind that is in dire need of enlargement.
Now, why don't you go out and do something positive with your life instead of spreading foolish ideas that polarize humanity even further.
By the way, I have never YET heard of a Buddhist being involved in wars or evil doings. What is your beef with them?

Sir,
You can review my profile as a proof point that your assumption of mental retardation of Christians is incorrect. Once one existence proof is offered up, your entire argument logically fails. I am also a member of MENSA, so I am definitely not lacking in the intelligence quotient department.
Moreover, I have taken thirty years or so to formally study religious beliefs, philosophy, logic, science, and theology. From the flippancy in your question(s) I doubt you have spent any time formally studying these topics and are merely parrotting back what you have heard or seen elsewhere.
When you are ready to post some cogent questions, I am sure some folks here will be able to respond with grounded and reasoned answers.

the answer to that would be no.
A recent survey of members of the National Academy of Sciences showed that 72% are outright atheists, 21% are agnostic and only 7% admit to belief in a personal God.
Your question is ALL.. that shows not ALL do. Also I am
woman of faith. I have a nice size IQ. I do believe what you are trying to do is to upset people of a Christian faith. I am not Christian but I do have respect for many of them. Some of them are in-fact very intelligent.

You went to great lengths to make your point but to what avail. All people of religion will continue in their own religion not fazed in the least by your comments. And Atheists while agreeing with them find nothing especially new. I'm not trying to discourage your belief or dampen your enthusiasm. but encourage you to remember this for your future questions.
