Lol. Aviation Mechanic See Combat? Not Likely. I'm Currently With A Helo Unit Here In Iraq And The Only Places The Mechs Go Is The Flightline And Back To Their Cans To Sleep. The Mechs Don't See Much Of This Country Let Alone Combat.

My son is a Marine, with an MOS in the Aviation Electronics/Maintenance occupational field. He is currently deployed, but does not take part in patrolling the streets or knocking on doors with a gun in his hand. They will have you doing what you were trained to do.... work in a shed or hanger on an air base in the middle of the desert in the middle of nowhere... (which is a direct quote from my son!) So although it's a dangerous place in general, you'd be in a relatively safe situation.

Check out the different military branches and see what MOS designations interest you... ask questions like where you'd be working (on an inside deck on a carrier, with limited opportunity to see outside?? On an airbase in New Mexico? Find out where the bases are and what types of situations you'd find as a norm, for that MOS. Weigh that with what type of training you'd get, what the salary ranges are, the length of the enlistment... and how marketable you'll be in the private sector when your enlistment is up.

Everybody's going to tell you their own branch of the military is the best... so don't listen to any of us... go do the homework yourself and see what feels right for you.

Oh... and by the way... ooOO-RAH MARINE CORPS!! :)

Aviation mechanics are limited to the repair and maintenance of aircraft and could not be deployed in combat operations.

He could, particularly if his expertise is choppers rather than fixed wing aircraft ! Helicopters many times are closer to the fray whereas fixed wing Marine and Navy aircraft are normally aboard a carrier. Being closer to a combat zone can make a base susceptible to mortar attacks !

You forgot about the Army and all the little helicopters that the Army has, most likely you would not see combat, you would be on a base working on planes and such, you would see a deployment maybe, depending on what planes you were certified for and where you were stationed, but you would not see direct, kicking in doors combat.

If you're worried about seeing combat, you shouldn't join the military at all, much less the Marine Corps.

In actuality, you wouldn't be likely to see direct action, but everyone in the military is subject to combat.

In today's world, no, although they may be the victim of some cowardly little Islamic worker seeking to let Allah finger him in the holly land. Have you ever noticed that the only terrorists are men, jeez, even in their whacked out murdering spree Islam won't cut women a break!

That's a big maybe. He will probably work on aircraft, but if they need people for patrols, an individual could find themselves pounding pavement.
