My hair is only an inch to begin with . 1/2 inch of colored hair and 1/ 2 inch of new growth that needs to be retouched. Can this be done without saturating any of the hair that has already been colored?

Yes you can have your hair professionally colored at the roots, leaving the longer hair even if it is only 1/2 inch in length the color that it is. If it was all colored of course the darker hair would still have a tint of being darker then the growth at the roots. I think it would be most difficult to do this at home on your own. With my longer hair I do color the new growth at first and when I have finished this, I add some color to the longer part of my hair as it will fade a bit during growth. When the new growth is colored first, it will have the advantage of having the color on longer in time then the longer hair, this gives more time for the first colored to have more time to absorb the color.

Use "Roots Only". Comb your roots. You could stay the same color that you have now, or you could go your natural color. For going with your natural color you need only use a temporary (wash out) color and by the time it completely washes out you will have all your natural color again.

I use a product called "ROOTS ONLY"... it's a plastic bottle with a lid that has a comb on the end, with holes in the ends of the teeth. Just comb it through and it will reach only the roots.
