Getting over the temptations to act on your homosexuality desires is the first step. Prayer and scripture study will definitely help. When it comes to quitting a smoking habit, check with the missionaries in your area, they always have stop smoking workshops for investigators, so it would work for you to.
As far as the people that tell you that the Mormon Church (LDS) is wrong or not of God. Well, just ignore them and feel free to slap an ignorant label on them.
Good luck.

The LDS church offers different kind of counseling and programs to benefit you if you are really wanting to change. The key is as you start your process there WILL be attempts from Satan to tempt you and cause people to offend you...IGNORE it. It all starts with you! If your love the church and your membership in the church is strong enough you will be able to develop strength to overcome your weaknesses. I feel for ya man although I don't have those weaknesses I am sure they are tough to overcome. But, think if you do overcome them how much stronger a person you will be!

Good for you. I think a great step is to go in and talk to the bishop of the ward you're wanting to or are currently attending. He could help you and give you more personal adivse than we can. Besides, that's what he's there for, and he will probably be very happy that you're trying to get started on the right path.
I did notice something in the Ensign recently with someone who had the same problem as you, though. I don't remember the details, but you can go to lds.org and look up gay or homosexual and I'm sure you'll find some articles to help you. There's tons of good advise there, too, on how to get back with any problems we have. Prayer is a key part to it. Also, go to church. If it's a normal ward, people will be really glad to help you if you want them to. Getting involved helps you to take your mind off of the problem. Well, God bless!

I think there are some gay lds support groups out there. I would assume they are in areas where there are lots of lds, like UT or maybe CA.
Talk to your Bishop, and try LDS social services too.
Concerning smoking, have you tried the patch and/or the gum?
Be sure to replace the habit with something else. Also, and it might sound crazy, but pick out a Primary song to sing, hum, etc when you catch yourself doing something you don't want to do (whether it's smoking or looking at guys or any thing else). It really works. We just had a Stake Conference broadcast yesterday and one of the speakers mentioned that he caught himself humming I Am A Child of God one day. He thought about it and noticed he had been humming it as he walked for several blocks. He said that he started humming it when a scantily clad woman walked in front of him. He didn't even notice he was humming it for several blocks.
I also sing or hum various songs when I notice I'm doing or thinking about something I shouldn't. It takes my mind off the thought, and allows me to replace it with something wholesome.

I don't know of any help within the church. Exodus International is probably the biggest Christian (not Mormon) ministry that would be a help to you. If Exodus International does not have an office near you, then contact www.family.org and ask your question there. They can help you with the information you need.

You probably won't be able to get rid of your desires completely, but the longer you go without, and put it out of your mind, the easier it will be to ignore/not give into your urges. It's a tough thing, but you need to keep busy, surround yourself with people that don't attract the types of things you have issues with, and pray. Who knows why people are gay, they really don't have sufficient evidence yet, but you can surely do whatever you put your mind to. Good luck.

Well, I would start with the easiest part first. Get a new religion. Then stop smoking, then live the word of God by living your life truthfully and honestly. Sorry to tell you, but if your sexual orientation is gay and you live as a straight person, you are living a lie. A lie can only hurt you and those you are lying to, including God. Think about it.

Love is never wrong.
My first advice would be to find a more accepting denomination. Short of that, however, you just live a fake, pretend life for the next 70-80 years.

Sorry to disabuse you! You cannot change your sexual orientation, you can only live in the closet and pretend to be straight, this will destroy not only your life but also that of any woman you might marry plus any offspring you may have.
Self acceptance is always the best and most honest policy, it's the difference between living the gay truth or a sham straight lie.
Of course you could live a lonely celibate life but that is best reserved for priests and nuns.
If the church won't accept you find another church that will.

Well, there is no simple solution, but I admire your intentions.
I am sure it will be a long ride.
I would suggest keep coming to church, and work with the Bishop. you fail only if you stop trying.
God Bless.
