System requirements to support Windows Vista
Windows Vista Capable and Premium Ready PCs from Lenovo
Do you already own, or are you thinking of buying, a Windows® XP-based computer that you plan to upgrade to Windows Vista™?
Lenovo makes it easy. In addition to offering systems with Windows Vista preloaded, many of our Windows XP-based PCs are suitable to be upgraded to Vista.
To ensure your system meets the necessary requirements for Vista, refer to the following information. You can also try out the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor Beta to check your current system to see if it is Windows Vista capable.

Requirements to support basic Windows Vista features
PCs that meet the following specifications will run the core Windows Vista experiences at a minimum:
 800MHz x86 or x64 central processor
 512MB of system memory
 DirectX 9-Capable graphics processor with 32MB of video RAM
Requirements to support premium Windows Vista features
For an even better Windows Vista experience including the Windows Aero user interface, a PC should meet or exceed these requirements:
 1 GHz x86 or x64 processor2
 1 GB system memory
 A graphics processor that runs Windows Aero1
 A 40 GB hard drive with 15 GB of free space
 A DVD-ROM drive3
 Audio output capability
Internet access capability
Microsoft maintains a Windows Vista Web site with detailed information on system requirements and other information about Windows Vista.

There are upgrades available for, I believe ALL the versions of Vista that are out. The one I would buy would be Home Premium. Home Basic lacks several key features that you'd want to upgrade for, and Ultimate has more features than you really need.

Just make sure your system meets the recommended requirements. One thing for sure, I would recommend that you NOT upgrade if you have less than 1 GB of RAM. I have 1 GB, and I plan to upgrade that to 2 GB as soon as I get the money.

If your system can handle it, Vista is an awesome OS. It's beautiful, functional, and whether or not people like to admit it, it has several great new features, although a majority of them are not something you notice right away. Not to mention, it runs a whole lot more stable and faster than XP from my experience. I still have XP set for a dual-boot right now, for iTunes mostly, since Apple's still been too lazy to issue an update to support Vista.

You can buy either...

Make sure you have minimum system requirements... need some decent hardware...

Just follow the prompts... it is not that difficult and if you have never installed a customized os you probably don't need one... just read carefully and choose defaults...

good luck...
