I agree...in fact I would even go a step further and say that Religion is THE worst invention EVER. Although it started out good and gives hope like someone else said, look what's happening. Man kills his own kind in the name of "Holy Wars" and blames god. I mean this is just stupid. There's no clear proof to show god actually exists, at least physically. What's the point in harming something that exists physically, something with life in it, something that has blood in it, for some entity that may or may not exist.
To me a "good" religion would be a religion that allows everyone to think for themselves instead of following one particular leader and make sacrifices and all that. A religion that teaches common virtues which help make a peaceful society like not trying to cheat people, always speaking the truth and such fundamentals and how to look at life positively.
I'm a hindu, while I'm not a very religious person my religion teaches some of these ideas. According to the Bhagavad Gita, which is the Bible of hinduism, it doesn't matter which god you worship, in the end it's your deeds during your lifetime that determines where you go after dying. But there are a lot of things I disagree with in my religion(and I feel they're pointless). For example, it says "Do not be interested in this material world and in women, they're all "maya"(illusions which distract you from salvation)". Now that doesn't make sense to me, mankind wouldn't even be here in the first place if men weren't interested in women. Basically to me religion in today's world has become more trouble than its worth.
Mankind won't last long this way. We need to stop looking at our differences and look at mankind as one single race and look toward the future. Combat issues like global warming, protect our planet and when the time comes when our planet's resources are all used up, or when the sun expands in around 5 billion years we need the technology to leave the earth for another world in order to survive. If the human race can last that long and avoid extinction, let alone leaving for another planet I would agree humans really are superior to other life forms.
BTW good question, I'm completely with you on this. I'm starring this question. At least I know that someone thinks like me.

You believe on a mere survey written by an author of a magazine which is intended to capture your belief but you do not believe on the bible that God exist and the organized religion that now existing has to inform you as well as to teach you about the existence of God in order that you will be a good citizen, to abide with the good things written on the bible, but still you refuse. If you say religion is the invention, what is the survey from a BBC Focus Magazine? Is it not a written words or story from a man which you now believe? Think otherwise please.

You say, "religion is an invention of man's ... we all know it is".
If you speak for everyone in your assumption that you know this for an established fact, then, your query is very biased. I am a Christian, and would AGREE that religion is a "worst invention" because people have invented religion. But; do people really know what a bad invention is ? Crack cocaine, meth, etc. are some of the bad inventions (from a moralistic stand point) and why weren't these listed ? Of course, in all fairness to genuine and true Christianity, I support spirituality - not religion.

It's so easy to diss religions and blame them for all the worlds evil. Nobody ever considers the fact that only a minority of religious people are retarded. Besides, all of the good things that religion does is immense. When religions are at their peak, culture and learning is usually at its peak too (eg, look at the great amount of awesome religious architecture). Not to mention the fact that religion gives people hope and something to look up to, as well as an aim to improve themselves. And let's not forget-- the most fundamental laws of society are essentially based on religion. The only time religion seems to suck is when politics creates many problems, and then people twist religion to get people to follow their hidden political agenda. Or, also, fundamentalist religions suck. Period. But like I said, nobody ever considers the good contributions of religion. By the way, you athiests should stop complaining about people shoving their views in your face and being intolerant to you because statements like "no cheating by saying you don't think religion is an invention of man's please, we all know it is" clearly show that we're on a 2-way street.

i do not think we all know it is a man made invention. if we all knew that than how come so many people have religion? how come so many people believe so thoroughly so whole heartedly in god. and a poll of 4000 people is hardly concrete evidence. i dont think that it is an invention but i will answer your question as though i do (i love playing devils advocate.) i think that the majority of religious people find hope, inspiration and love in their religion. yes there are many who find hate also but they are actually the minority. they just get the most attention. cuz they are stupid. without religion we would not have had mother theresa, her devotion to God made her do the great things she did . without religion we would not have had Dr. Martin Luther King. He believed that the fight for equal rights was a mission that was spelled out to him in the bible. the oldest question man has ever asked is "what is the point? or where did we all come from" religion provides people an answer to this question. why is any of this bad?

Actually it might be one of our best as most religions stress love and acceptance, it has been a force for good and love in the modern world. If you look at the worst wars(in terms of body count) in the 20th century they were started by socialist or communist governments (national socialists, communists etc etc)
The problem arises with your poll, Mark Twain said it best "there are 3 kinds of lies, Lies, damn lies, and statistics" the radio times most likely has a very left wing anti religious base so what would you expect?
One last question, if you walking down a dark alley and had 3 youths walking behind you would you feel more secure if they were christians on their way to a bible study?
The truth will set you free.

Religion has value but some take it too far. Look at these muslims, not all are bad but there are many who take it too far and kill people in the name of their religion.
Most religions teach people good rules to live by that make the world a better place to live. But those who are evil, cause much pain.
As a Christian, I do not like religion at all. I love my relationship with my God, the one and only true God, the God of love and peace.

First, polls are worded to get the results the pollster wants to achieve. I could do a poll and depending on the way I worded it could get the opposite result.
Christianity is not an invention or a religion, it is a way of life.

I'm a Christian man that does not believe in any religion for religion breaks the Commandments that God has given us.
Being Christian is a reality and not a religion.
Religion is a man made theology that usurps the Word of God.<><

Any invention can be used for bad things.
The problem with religion is that people think that heaven or hell awaits if they do this or don't do that--that offers rulers a lot of power! And a lot of rulers are seeking to do their own will --which most of the time is not good for people in general.
Very interesting poll!
