There are several ways to answer this question. The text book answer is there are three braches of the government: Judical, Legislative, and Executive.
However, one can make the argument that the media is the unofficial fourth branch of the government, because of the power that they have to tell what issues they feel are important, or to distract you through stories to scare you so you aren't interested in the important issues.
As an example, why do you think the top news stories are about crime, and news stations have special reports about things that can harm you are kill you. The logic is that these threats are more immdeiate than the bigger issues.
Also arguments can be made that the military industrial complex iscan be an unofficial brach of the government.

There are three branches in the United States' government:
The Legislative, which makes the laws (Congress)
The Executive, which enforces the laws and (President)
The Judicial, which interperts the laws. (Supreme Court)
(Items in quotes refer to the major administrative body responsible for this branch).
Government was seperated into three branches in order to create a system of checks and balances in order to limit the authority of each brach and prevent abuses of power. Montesquieu is generally credited with the creation of this theory.

Three. Executive, Legislative and Judicial. They are supposed to be separate but equal, but I think the Supreme Court has greater powers since they can overrule both the executive and legislative branch.
