Have a friend take the pic. Just be yourself. Get the natural look. Maybe an outdoors photo or one of you doing something you like.

anything 2 megapixal and above is good enough. i m not an expert but the basic of taking good photo is to keep your hand as stable as possible while taking a shot. the second thing is not tho take a picture of a person look small in the photo, try some close up picture. and lastly make sure it have enough lighting around to snap a photo.
weather how to pose is depending on your imagination.
good luck on your pictures

I would put the camera on a shelf or something steady. If you are having someone make a composite, be sure and stand infront of a solid color background that is not a color that you are wearing. Set the timer and be natural.

A tip I learned from a photographer buddy: He told me to yawn just before a picture, it helps relax the muscles used to smile. It gives you a more nautral and relexed smile!

If you don't have a tripod you could have it up on a high shelf or something like that and make it even up to you. A nice pose would be to stand straight and it might look good outside?
