I can run for about 5 mins on the road, treadmill, or playing soccer, before I start cramping but I can go all day on the elliptical.

Same as above - elliptical is low impact aerobic exercise, running is high impact. The only way to get over it is to just push yourself to do a little more each time. Run for 5 mins, next time run for 5 mins 30 secs, next time for 6 mins etc. You will start to find that you are able to go a longer distance before the cramping starts, and you will eventually find that it doesn't happen at all as your muscles become used to the impact. Sometimes muscles cramp if you haven't drunk enough fluid so also make sure you are always well hydrated before you start to run. Running on the road is particularly hard on the legs, so build up some resistance on the treadmill first to get your muscles used to it before heading out on the concrete.

I think it is because when you are on the elliptical, your body weight is not striking the ground. I own an elliptical myself, and I have the same problem. Someone once told me to eat more bananas ( for potassium) .

More abuse from running on hard surface. Might need to look into better shoes. Elliptical no impact

on the treadmill/road you're flexing your calf muscle when you stride, you're essentially jumping off of one foot, but on the eliptical your feet stay planted so they dont have the fast twitch activity in the muscle, it doesnt have the same contract release as when running
