my children will be 1 and 2 1/2 this summer and I really want to start them on swim lessons at the same time. Many people I have talked to told me that they started their kids around the ages of my kids. Is this a good time? I'm especially wondering about my daughter. (she will be 1 in June)

As young as possible! There are actually infant swim courses, that teach children less than 1 year how to float on their backs. This has saved many lives.

I started lessons at age 2. I never became a fantastic swimmer (due to poor coordination and messed up knees), but I could definitely survive if in a bad water situation.

I was a lifeguard a long time ago. If YOU are going to be teaching your children how to swim, I would suggest the ages of 3 and 4. Their muscles are stronger and they are also more eager to learn than children younger. I've taught 4 and 5 year olds in just one session because they are intellectually advanced to understand/accept instruction than a frightened toddler. If a child shows fear, don't force it, wait a bit longer. Most kids love the water, so if they beg you....TEACH!!

First of all have them in the water with you as much as possible whenever you go swimming, yes even when they're a baby (be sure to hold them and use appropriate precautions) this will insure that they are comfortable with the water. I would start them off with formal swimming lessons as early as three. In order for your kid to learn though you are going to have to leave the pool area so they are not disctracted.

My daughter wasn't even 6 months old when I started putting her in the water with me. My ex inlaws had a house on one of New York's finger lakes. She loved it, especially when I'd dunk her under the water. She would come up sputter and giggling. When she was about a year old she went swimming in my mom's neighbor's back yard inground pool. Yes I always went with her by the end of the summer she would push me away and say "me do". By the summer after he 2nd birthday she was jumping off the diving board. Just living up to her astrological sign of Aquarius? (Well my ex did say that her ultrasound photo looked like a frog...LOL)

My son started when he turned 3 and was a little scared at first but is doing great now! You can start them, see how it goes, if it's too soon then try again next summer.

as early as possible! make sure the swim teacher is a qualified instructor though and has all the right first aid requirements.
