Whenever I say I'm going to the restroom, my co-worker says, "Leave a quarter on the counter!" He gets a kick out of it every time and so do others but I don't get it. Why is this funny?

It is a reference to paying to use the toilet. He is basically telling you to pay to use the restroom, just a cute saying, nothing else

In some large cities in the world, you have pay toilets. You have to have some change to put in the slot to unlock the door. I think NY tried these???
