One thing that helps me most is focusing on just one thing. And you can buy these wonderful CDs of Progressive Relaxation. And it is almost like hypnosis! It has soothing music or nature sounds in the background and someone makes suggestions to you like "Imagine yourself in your favorite place....what do you see.....hear... smell....focus on your breathing, inhale through your nose drawing in all the oxygen to your brain and throughout your bloodstream, then exhale out of your mouth, letting go of all your thoughts, stresses, and "to do" lists...." and on and on, they are awesome! Also I love those machines and tapes and cds that you can buy of nature sounds. Rushing waters and waterfalls are my faves! ooooh and RAIN!

All of the above. And try to get into a rutine also. That will help you because when you do things in order it "trains" your body. So, after a while your body will be used to it and it will know when bed time is. Make sure it's the same order every night though. And remember that you have to work at it, it won't just happen right away. Especially if you don't want to get on medication, I didn't want to either. Good luck!!

Lavender, a completely dark room, keep the room cooler than the rest of your house (just by a couple of degrees), don't take a shower right before bed...if you do shower in the evenings, do it a couple of hours before bedtime or switch to baths (bath raises your body temp helping you fall asleep faster) Don't eat anything heavy in the evening, try very slow deep breathing exercises, and honestly, sex will do the trick every time.

I listen to a pianist Jim Brickman. He has very soothing and beautiful music. Also...lavender scents are soothing and might help you sleep. I get hot when I sleep so I turn a fan on just to blow the air around my room. The motor noise is very soothing.

You may need to eliminate caffeine and other stimulant from your diet for a while. Meanwhile try drinking a cup of chamomile tea or warm milk with a little vanilla in it. Place a lavender sachet under your pillow. if you can find a recording of soft music with the sounds of water(rain, surf etc) that will also help to relax you.

I have had insomnia most of my life. . . Try a soothing decaf tea at night, or taking a hot shower to help you relax your body before you go to bed. This works for me, also listening to classical music really low (the kind without words) helps to stop my brain from thinking all night.

I light up a lavender or jasmine scented candle or oil, 5 minutes before I go to bed. This makes me relax. And use a lampshade, not your main bright light, this signifies that surroundings have toned down. It send a signal that it's time to rest and sleep.

Regular sleep/wake patterns seven days a week. Regular exercise. No caffeine after three, or preferably not at all. Soft music helps me, but it is discouraged by specialists. They recommend white noise...a fan, ocean sounds, thunderstorm sounds...etc. Email me if you want to talk. I've been working on insomnia for 10 years. Gaa_Winds@yahoo.com.

Hi Jessica. There are lots of remedies - just search google - but they really depend on the individuals. I can tell you what WORKS on me: drink warm milk 30 minutes before bed time, and then just as soon as you get in bed, massage each and every one of your toes. It works like magic on me. Hope it does to you as well. Sweet dreams ;)
