A. Most jails and prisons will not allow visitors who are felons. So, if you were convicted of a misdemeanor, you may still be allowed to visit.
B. Your terms and conditions of probation probably indicate you should not be associating with certain people... like those on parole, those using or possessing drugs or alcohol, etc...
Check the rules carefully before you try to visit your friend.

Depends on your location, but I know from California correction department list of visitation rules (got a prison penpal over there) + a couple of adverts on http://www.prisonpenpals.com that once released you aren't allowed to go near a prison facility for 2yrs without permission from the Warden first + also not allowed to communicate with prisoners for the same length of time (and they aren't allowed to contact you either if they're up for Parole soon)......... and a read through the visitation rules list will soon have you thinking "sod this" (in my case so does a look at my bank balance, seeing as it's about 5000miles over to where my penpal is), since they include the colour & type of clothes you can't wear + what you aren't allowed to bring.

Call the particular institution (the prison where your friend is housed) and ask their rules on visitation.
Most DO allow but there are different restrictions for different institutions.
BTW: If you have any outstanding warrants or have violated your probation do NOT go. They will arrest you as while you are visiting they are running your information through crime data bases to check for warrants. This pertains to almost ALL penal institutions including city and county jails.
Peace.

Usually, no.
For jail, it depends on the county, some are strict about it, others pretty relaxed unless you're co defendants.
For prison visits-You can apply but you'll need a letter from your PO stating both that you are in compliance with all of your terms of release AND that the office approves of your visiting that specific inmate.
You can visit http://www.prisontalk.com to get more information about the procedures and regulations for your jurisdiction.

I currently work for a prison, we usely run a NCIC check on every vistor added to a visting list before it is approved. Most of the time the answer is No. But you could eaisly call the prison and ask the operator answering the phone, they should refer you to someone who can answer that question

I've always been under the impression that once out, paroles are not supposed to have any contact with other paroles.
