If the steering is that bad please don't drive it. Have it towed to a repair shop. You have a bunch of worn parts in the front end. I couldn't tell which parts are bad but I bet you have worn bushings and a lot of slop in the steering wheel. It may cost you some money but what if you'd killed the old lady, you would spend much more money on a lawyer.

Worn linkages wont make your steering not work, and then all of a sudden work. They are either broke or their not. Your problem is the power steering pump. My 86 ford did the same thing, to where the pump would stop working, and then work. Buy a new pump, and your fixed ! I could see steering gears, linkages, ect, if the steering quit all together, but not how you described it.

check all the linkage from the firewall to the steering box, then the steering linkage under the vehicle. it may be something has lost a nut, a stripped gear in the box, worn out connector mechanisms for the pitman arm etc. grab the linkage underneath and see if it has any looseness to anything. lack of normal lubrication will cause it to wear and become loose. even bad ball joints can occur if not greased occasionally.

replace the power steering pump and check the steering ball at the end of your steering column under the hood....located just below the power steering pump.

i would consider getting a new steering box or tie rods, that should do it and if it doesn't take it to a dealership.
