Paint the walls in a soft brownish colour to match the rug. If it's a small space, you can get miscoloured paint from paint stores for a fraction of the usual cost. I would not do borders or things like that unless they are well out of the way of the child...they pull em down! If you are crafty, you can stencil or paint forest-y scenes on a wall, and paint his dresser to look like a tree trunk. Get a silk plant and hang it up high in the corner and if you are able to get some netting (like hunter netting) that would make a cool tent...my son loves tents. Paint the ceiling to look like a sky, with swirling clouds or a sunshine and put the glow-in-the-dark stars on it so that they light up at night.
Mostly, I'd try to go for something he can grow into, and a forest would be something like that. My son's nursery is going to be a mess when I try to turn the soft stars and clouds into an army barracks or firehall...
Good luck with it and HAVE FUN!

Paint trees on the walls (Even if your not an artiest, get a friend to do it or do it your self. Its for a child's room so even armature work would be cute). Wal-mart has very cheep pain. Pain the wall red or yellow, take a black permit marker and out line the trees. get a can or dark brown paint, a can of dark green paint, and a can of white paint. You can mix up a variety of shades for painting and shading your trees. I did it with my children's play room. It is my favorite room in the house.
Oh, and it looks corny if you care out the theme everywhere. Go with a solid brown bed spreed with a striped dust ruffle. You could get that from a good will or something.

You can paint and if you are good at drawing, paint animals on the walls. Or google Wallies which are like stickers you put on the wall or look for a wall paper border.
Don't worry too much about a theme or decorating bc his room which just be full of toys anyways! That's how my toddler is.

I would suggest something in neutral colors, browns, like natural wood for furniture. Trust me as they get older that good old fashion wood toy box, bunk bed or nightstand will hold up. We usually just get cheap posters to liven it up a bit, like whatever theyre into like Cars, Cinderella , Dora, Princesses whatever then bright curtains and bedding. They also sell fairly cheap play mats with those cartoony things too.

I recommend velcro walls and make him a little velcro jumpsuit. That way, you'll always know where he is. You'll have the peace of mind knowing that even if he climbs the walls - he won't get far. As he gets older, he'll use his bed to trick off of onto the wall. Before you know it - he'll be an olympic gymnast or diver.
