I would go the blues, purples. I have rich wooden furnature against some darker feature walls and they really bring out the redish/ browns in the wood.

I f you are going to have dark colors in it and you want it to be warming than go with darker wall color.
I really like a dark red that is the color of my dads room and it looks relly good and it is a very warm and cozy color I think that it will look great!

Then keep with that theme, brown chair and bookcases, well my opinion chose a colour theat ties with the brown but is calming to you. Not red that is a very aggresive colour

paint it a medium color, not too light , nor too dark - too light the furniture will contrast grotesquely, too dark - you'll get migranes from eye strain due to a single light source. medium colors will reflect a portion of the light around the room and wont force your eyes to constantly re-adjust from light and dark surroundings
kind of like watching tv in a dark room - it gets annoying after a while
