We have a cat who's lived in our house as long as we have. It's been over 7 years that we've lived here and all of a sudden he poops on a rug in our bathroom. This rug has been in there for over 2 years and he's never done a thing to it, now all of a sudden, for the past month, he poops on it. One time he peed, but mostly he poops. Once we clean the rug, within 2-3 days he poops on it again. Does anyone have an idea as to why he might be doing this?

There are several reasons it could be happening.
Did you get a new pet, move the furnature (like a favorite sleeping place), are keeping a door closed that wasn't before, or using new cat food or cat litter. If you recently changed something like that he might be mad and trying to get back at you.

It could also be a cry for attention. Pets are like kids, they will act out for attention even if it gets a negative feedback.

He might have just had an accident one day and now his scent is in the rug and he thinks its ok to go there. He thinks of it as another litter box

Or he might just not like the rug (time for a new one)

He's punishing your for something. Maybe something not important for you, a new product you're using to wash the carpet, something wrong with his litter box, he may hate that smell (perfum to us). Maybe someone new in the house, or any change: try to remember what happened immediately before the first poop!
Eventually change the carpet. It may be the smell does never go away completely, that makes him repeat the pee/poo.
