Birthmarks or "nevi" are discolorations due to anomalies in the embryonic development of the skin, especially those affecting the blood vessels of the subcutaneous layer in small or wide areas. They are not thought to be intrauterine pressure marks but the precise cause is unknown. They affect all races and both genders equally. Some disappear as the child grows while some (like Gorbachev's) remain into adulthood. They have descriptive names like "strawberry", "spider" and "port wine stain" and some can be removed surgically.

according to the theory of genetics :

Locked inside certain genes are the signals that tell cells what to do next. These signals tell a cell where to go when building blood vessels, and to follow certain pathways through muscle, bones, and internal organs.

when cells don't get the right message and they go to the wrong place and do not develop proper arteries, veins, and capillaries. This is what happens when a vascular birthmark is born. These improperly formed vessels are called vascular malformations and can be as small as a capillary blush on the cheek, to tangles of large vessels that can grow and disfigure, and are sometimes fatal to a child. Receptor kinase called TIE-2, which is specific for signaling to endothelial cells is found to cause or trigger birthmarks. As this gene is found to pass on for generations birthmarks are found to be hereditary.

what do they indicate ?

They indicate some biochemical changes inside our body thus they are potential medical indicators !

eg: Birthmarks of the eye and eyelids as indicators of ocular or systemic tumors.

A birthmark is a blemish on the skin formed before birth. They are part of the group of skin lesions known as naevi. The cause of birthmarks is unknown, but may include cellular damage due to radiation or chemicals. Some types seem to run in families.

By the way, great question!
