it does i suppose..which is quite humiliating and stigmatizing for true people that suffer with this problem and not just the ones "doing it cuz everyone else is doing it" but thats more younger teenagers. But yes I have seen this trend more and more and as a person who has suffered with issues of self mutilation for 7 years it is quite disturbing.

Well, since the media has put more of it out there (from news reports like Dateline and 2020 to magazines like Time and Newsweek), more ppl know about it. Therefore, it is more widely known by more people. Also, remember, there are more kids who are home alone without one/both parents and are more likely to be depressed and get into this. It is not really a trend like you are saying in the terms of a "fad" like wearing your jeans a certain way or whatever. It is more of a "statistical trend" where it is real and not as much of a hey, that looks cool bc stacy does it thing.

I don't know if it is necessarily a "trend" as such. I just think that things are talked about more than they used to be.
Self mutilation is not something that I really understand. I can understand the self destructive mode of thinking that goes along with it, but the actual cutting itself is a whole other ball game. My sister is 14 and she has been cutting for about a year, she has scars over her arms and her legs and there are constantly fresh ones. I have asked her what it is about, and she says the action of cutting herself and feeling pain is an emotional release of sorts. I guess equivalent to crying. I just cry myself, but then some people find it difficult to be vulnerable even with themselves. I don't even know if she realises what damage she is doing (psychologically) to herself and her family. It is really painful as her sister to sit back and watch her hurt herself and know that there is nothing I can do to stop it.

That's a good question and it does seem like cutting and self-mutilation are becoming more and more popular. One reason for this could be the way our society is behaving. The depression and opression has been steadily increasing as we sink further and further into mire.

Another reason that ties onto my first one is peer pressure. As silly as it might sound to be bullied into things like cutting, it does happen, just not in the traditional sense. "It's ok, you're allowed to feel this way." "There's nothing wrong hurting yourself, everyone does." "Just release your anger however you want to". And my favorite "If you really hate yourself, why shouldn't you feel both emotional and physical pain?"
It's senseless, yet we're told it's ok.

My third reason is image. So often girls (and even guys too) feel like they are worthless the way they are. They compare themselve to others and feel gross when doing so; thanks to the 'try to look as good as you can" image we've worked up. So either they take their anger about the way they look out on themselves, or they try to end their hurt. Or perhaps they wish to gain attention by telling others "Hey, this is how much I'm hurting. Can't you see what you've done to me?". When really, they don't exactly know who to blame for the way they feel and are now acting.

The last reason is to numb the pain. So many people are resorting to hurting themselves because they hurt. It happends all too often. They don't want to be hurting anymore, for whatever reason they might have. Relationship issues, self-image, abuse, the list is endless. Some would comtemplate suicide, while others like the ones you've metioned, would rather try to dull their emotional pain by feeling physical pain instead. For them, it feels good in a ritualistic sort of way.

That was longer than I intended and was mostly opinion, but I find it hard to shut up once I get going. Hope it helps.

Native Americans have been doing it since forever. It's part of releasing sorrow. In WW2 people were doing it......it's not like it's not been here for awhile.....but it is becoming a bit "glamourized". I've done it, and I remember thinking that I was trying to get what was tearing me up inside ...out. It's a release of things....and although strange, many find it a sort of poetic and artistic ritual.....in some ways. I'm not sure if I can explain it, but to a lot of people it just feels good to bleed.

some people may think that it is a trend and do it for attention--you need to stop!!! but, other people do it to release pain forom themselves. it is an emotional outlet. if somethign traumatice has happened to you, adn you dotn know where to turn, you trun inward. you rely on yourself to help youself, adn sometimes that just doesnt work. so, when your head is spinning and your crying everyday, you choose to cause other pain, so you can ignore the one in your heart.

it may be a trend for some people, but for others its an outlet to release pain. i did it when i was a kid, to help myself over come a traumatic experince. back then it was unknown, and now everyone tries it.

dont call it a trend though. some do it for attention, and others as a cry for help. i guess in both senarios its for attention. but one has a meaningful purpose and the other does not.

if you knwo someone cutting help them.

Thats a good question. Evidently, it just a missing link, in the brain, that most people have that prevents themselves from "self mutilation". The people that do it must be missing that link that tell them to go into the "Self Preservation" mode.

A lot of people probably would like to know the answer to your question. It is a very stupid thing to do and my be done just to get attention. Pops

there are various factors (nicely, theories) why this may be. She won't be very pleased or content fabric along with her existence, or herself, suitable now. She won't like her physique, she may be laid low with melancholy, perhaps she has economic, relatives, or different subject concerns which you will no longer be attentive to approximately. of course, in case you will see herwounds, she's no longer putting lots attempt to disguise it up. as a result, my concept for this isthat that's a cry for help. perhaps she's hoping which you're able to nicely be the single to help her. i think of you should evenly, and casually nonetheless heavily, confront her approximately it and inform her which you take care of her very lots and it hruts you to work out her hurting herself. many people who self-mutilates htemself merely want convenience and to be attentive to that a minimum of one guy or woman incredibly cares and needs to convenience them. perhaps you could take her out to..perhaps the park? the place she would be in a position to get sparkling air. instruct her that existence is all approximately being happy, and that it incredibly is too brief to be something yet happy. i assume if this ideas-set works, you should communicate her into getting soem help. perhaps she would be in a position to chat to you first approximately her complications or anxieties. As that slowly progresses, you could progressively communicate her into getting expert help, and doubtless for the 1st few visits, you could accompany her to make her sense soft. additionally, once you confront her approximately this, carry her hand, hug her, embody her, instruct some soft affection. inform her that she is merely too vivid and too sensible to try this to herself. inform her there is an entire international accessible waiting for her, and those wounds will merely remind her of undesirable memories and could merely keep her from residing her existence to the fullest. nicely, I hopw my suggestion helps! ultimate needs to you and the female.

Yes, body art is is fashion nowadays, providing work for artisans of many different skill levels, work quality and imagination. Graphic artists, amateur surgeons, jewelry mongers, meat-hook aesthetes, scarification cowboys. As much growth as has occurred, it's still an industry that's fat with potential.

It's because of a screwed up, materialistic culture that makes everyone feel unworthy if they don't measure up and bad parents who don't know how to give their children self worth.
