What does this quote mean to you guys?
"So we continue beating on, ceaselessly against the past."

Please help. anything will do

To me, this means constantly battling the past. But I think that you got the quote wrong a little bit. If you're talking about Fitzgerald's Gatsby, it's "So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly against the past."

I've seen or heard that before. I'm guessing maybe people always go on in the present looking into the future trying to make it better than the past.
