I have this problem. My closest loved ones tell me that I speak before I think. That's not the problem though. The problem is that I don't even realize it until they tell me. When I do think about it afterwards I put myself in a third person perspective and I can be horrified at the way some things I say may come across. I don't mean it the way it sounds but can't seem to catch myself before it comes out. Any advice? Anyone else do that too? Just turned 24 if that makes a difference.

Take a deep breath before you say anything -- that'll give your brain a second or two to put the breaks on whatever's about to pop out. Take two (or ten) if you need it:

"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt."

Now that you have been made aware of it by others, start counting to five or ten (in your head) before you say anything. It gives your mind and mouth extra time to "think and organize what to say". It doesn't have anything to do with age rather it's an overstimulated reaction. You might be unconciously thinking if you don't speak quickly then you won't get a chance to speak in a conversation (since other person might be a very fast talker). Just take a deep slow breath before you speak and retrain your brain to mouth reaction. Worked for me!! Good Luck.

walk away, hang up the phone, go into another room, etc.

I have this problem, and the ONLY thing that saves me is literally walking away for a minute (or 20 lol).

BUT, being that honest isn't ALWAYS bad. You just have to learn when and how to use it. Most people respect me for being THAT honest... even at work I have had the higher-ups compliment me for being fearless and always speaking my mind, even if it's NOT PC.

Its a blessing if you know how to use it, and curse if you don't. Once you learn self-control, it won't be nearly as bad trust me!

thats gonna be a hard habit to break.its human nature to speak before you think. everyone does it. you just have to try to ramify the situation afterwards.
