How come some people feel depressed, and when they tell someone, the person asks "why?". And the depressed person has no idea why they're depressed? The depressed person is depressed but they just don't know why.

The people who ask why obviously haven't experienced depression. They see sadness as depression. Depression happens because the body chemicals are off balance. Sadness and depression aren't the same thing at all. People just don't understand that.

Well, if someone is depressed it is likely that they don't know why and that can be more depressing. I mean, if you know what's causing the depression, wouldn't the thing to do be to fix it? It's also likely that the depressed person knows why they're depressed but can't do anything about it. A feeling of helplessness is a huge factor in depression. There's also the occassion that someone is chemically imbalanced. In that case, it's possible for someone to be depressed for no reason. Often medication is used to help the chemical defect in the brain. Though it does seem silly for someone to ask you why you're depressed. I guess it's just the thing we do to try to be genuinely careing. What are you supposed to say when someone says they are depressed? Say I'm sorry?? Hope this answers your question some!! Have a good day!!

There is more than one type of depression. One is situational depression and is usually caused by major life events (divorce, death of a loved one, etc.) Even good changes can bring this about because of adjustments and expectations. There are also chemical problems in the brain which can cause depression. If a person has a chemical issue, they would likely not know why they feel depressed as there doesn't appear to be a reason. Sometimes people also don't understand why they are depressed when something good happens in their life. Some of these things just require treatment (medication, therapy, even exercise helps).

Depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain. That's a place to start.

A person that is depressed may not know why, they just feel sad and very overwhelmed. It has taken me 4 yrs to find out why I suffer with depression. Why I feel hopeless..and many times helpless.

Depression can also be herditary... it effect's not only the person suffering mentally, but physically as well... and it effect's everyone in their life...

I hope that helps.. at least a little...

There are different types of depression with varying degrees of seriousness. Clinical depression is caused by an imbalance in the chemicals in your brain, environmental factors could make things worse but this type of depression is not situational. Which means that you feel extremely down even when everything in your life seems to be fine. Please go to a psychiatrist or your family physician if you suspect you might be depressed. If you have homicidal or suicidal thoughts please go immediately to the emergency room to get help. You may also need counseling. Contact your local mental health agency to be seen or to get a referral if you have insurance. You can feel better!!

Good Luck!!

Depression is sometimes caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Certain medications can fill in the missing chemical and bring a person back to the way they were before they became depressed. Regular MDs can prescribe them so see your doctor.

Because its a disease. Its chemical, not truly emotional. There does not have to be an external catalyst to cause the feeling of depression, its more of something internal that is out of whack. The world could be perfectly fine externally, and even internally, but the imbalance can sometimes cause an overwhelming sensation, or a numbed out sense of reality that makes you think that things just aren't very good.

Often times it can be a brain-chemistry imbalance. For some people this can be genetic especially if they have a history of depression in their family. Also, environmental factors play a large part in a person's depression. These environmental factors can play such a large part in affecting how a person feels that they may be unconsciously affected.
The unconscious is so powerful...and it is often inexplicable.

it all has to do with brain chemistry. people who have chronic depression often do not have the proper dopamine and seratonin (chemicals responsible for happiness, etc) levels. there is often no solid reason or cause for depression, it is more of a malfunction of the brain's ability to regulate the chemicals and hormones. that is why anti-depressants can be so helpful for some people, the medicine corrects the imbalance.

It's the same as when you can feel happy without reason. Just no one wonders about feeling happy. You feel depressed just for the sake of feeling depressed. It might just be your body isn't up to it that day and it gives you the feeling of depression. I get that sometimes.
