I've been to a few stores looking at carpet, and everyone has there own version of what makes their carpet the one for me.The carpet is for a living room that gets fairly heavy traffic. We have teenage kids and pets. Stain protection is a must. I would like info. about twists, pile, backing, material, and padding. I would like to spend in the $30-$60 range if possible. We have been looking at lees Titanium series and bigelow gold series. Thanks!

The tighter the twists, the better the carpet.

Face-weight is also a factor in determining the quality.

Polyester and nylon are usually softer, but polypropylene and olefin carpets are usually better at resisting stains and more easily cleaned.

Also, most carpets have a durability rating from 0 - 5. 5 being the best to keep their like new appearance longer. I don't know of any rated a 5.

There are a lot of different types of padding, but don't go with less than 8 pound density. It's like building a house on a good foundation - your padding being the foundation for your carpet. A medium grade carpet will hold up as well over a good pad than a better carpet over a less quality pad. There is also padding with a moisture barrier that you might want to consider since you have pets. It helps keep "accidents" from penetrating through the padding into the flooring beneath it.

By spending $30 - $60, I hope that you mean per square yard. One of the best should be priced around $40 per square yard plus installation.

Hope this helps.
