I usually get relaxers every 3-4months. But I would love to dye my hair an auburn color, right now it's dark brown. I don't know if I am to use semi perm. or permanent?.....I want the color to last but at the same time I don't want to damage my hair.. If I use the semi perm and I like the color, can I keep applying that color after it washes out or no? Help!

My hair stylist has always told me to wait at least two weeks between chemical processes. I have combination hair, so the ends of mine become very dry and brittle; therefore, I always wait at least six weeks. So if you have your hair chemically processed tomorrow, wait six weeks before the next treatment. Six weeks later, if you process every three months, it will be time for your next treatment.
Permanent or semi won't make too much of a difference. Permanant hair color fade, so it only make sense that semi would as well. On the other hand, I dyed my hair auburn when I was younger, and any red/auburn hair color will always leave a red tint to your hair until it grows out unless you have your hair stripped. Why do I say that? I have naturally dark brown hair. When I try to get rid of a few grays now and then or I am going back to brown from blond I use the darkest brown hair color available. It is as close to black as you can get without going black, but when I had the red tint in my hair just dying it back brown didn't work! I even tried black. Two weeks later you could see the red showing back through. It is a hard color to get rid of...LOL. But it can be done if you decide that you don't like it.

Use semi-permanent color for a dark auburn color. Do it right after you straighten it. To be sure, do a test strand on one side where it wont show, leave it on ten minutes longer than directions (it would take you more than 10 minutes to apply if you did the whole head). The professional color (like Attitudes at Sally(?) Beauty Supply doesnt come in a kit, but it's better on your hair (ask the saleslady what is popular in semi-permanent there). After you have tested it (just mix a teaspoon color with a teaspoon of developer and wear gloves). If your hair is already brown, remember, you only need to add red to brown to get a brighter auburn. Semipermanent color doesnt remove color just adds. Have fun...Oh, and if your test strand doesnt come out, or feels dry or tanglier than the rest, your hair is damaged and you should go to a salon, after you fet a referral from a friend whose hair you like!
If for some reason, you decided to do permanent color, you would want to use protein conditioner and wait a week before coloring after a relaxer. In future you'll need mild relaxer too.

You need to wait at least 2 weeks before coloring unless it is a rinse. Even a semi permanent can cause damage if used too soon.
If you choose a permanent or semi you will need to switch to a mild perm as long as you have the color. otherwise your hair will start to break off and shed.

go to a stylist and see what they think, if they think it wont damage your hair then go with a semi to see if you like it, and if you do then wait till it wears off and get it permanent.
