Since the car wouldn't be able to pass state inspection, you probably would be penalized for a burnt-out brake light. Since a new bulb is only a few dollars, I'd suggest you have the car's owner replace it (at your expense) in order to ensure there will be no adverse repecussions. When I went for my road test, the Inspector checked for lights, windshiled wipers, exhaust note (I almost failed because my father had glass-packed mufflers on his '56 Dodge D-500, which increased the noise level. Fortunately, the car had passed NY State Inspection days prior to my taking the road test), and the inspector also checked to make sure the windshield wasn't cracked!

They will tell you to fix it before taking the test. Your DMV booklet will give you a list of things that your car must have in working condition to take the driver's test.

No, it won't affect it, you just won't be allowed to take it, period. Sorry, but the law requires a quick inspection, and everything has to be in order, lights, windows, mirrors, tires, horn, etc.

Yes. Your vehicle must properly function. Same thing happened to me. If the instructor notices, he/she will fail you.
