Not illegal, but you were wise to cease contact. Things can be twisted and miscontrued and in todays' world of child molesters, kidnappings, internet creeps preying on minors, not to mention feminists jumping on guys and screaming sexual harassment for simple compliments, it's best to say nothing unless you know who you are speaking to and are relatively certain they will take the comment in the spirit it is intended.

How could paying someone a complement be illegal? Since you stop communication when you found out her true age, there really is nothing more to say. Maybe she should have been more upfront about her age, you are paranoid, you didn't do anything wrong.

it's alright man. no harm done. if you feel bad about it and guilty.. are you sure that's ALL you said? if it was just a compliment like that it's ok. stop worrying about it.. it's over anyways!!
