I have several favorite trails, but the most scenic bike trail in the world is the Tahoe Rim Trail from Mount Rose Meadows to Marlette Lake, and back to Mount Rose Meadows via the Flume Trail and Rim Trail. Lake Tahoe, CA.

This trail has it all. Panoramic views of Lake Tahoe and the Washoe Valley from the "Rim", a nine mile rolling section that leads from Mount Rose Meadows to the top of "Tunnel Creek Road".Technical rock problems and fast downhill sections will leave you grinning like a little kid! This trail junction is a great place to stop and have a snack, and get ready for the brutal climb ahead.

The next section, from Tunnel Creek to Marlette is a challenging, technical climb. View points abound (and make great rest stops). The most spectacular being the "Sand Harbor Overlook"- a 1/2 mile detour that will take you to a "top of the world" view. Once you have conquered the climb, you will be delighted with a very fast, not so technical downhill section that takes you to a beautiful backcountry lake (Marlette). This is a great spot to have lunch and rest up for the next section.

The Flume Trail is world renowned. It has been called "America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride" in numerous magazines. I just happen to like getting to it my way better than the actual ride. This section of the ride is where you just go "I must have died and gone to heaven". Try to keep your eyes on the trail, though, or you will die and go to heaven. The views are spectacular, but the 2000 foot dropoff will get you if you're not careful. Luckily, the trail here is NOT technical at all, and not even steep. In fact, it is almost dead flat, so you can just go as easy or as hard as you want. Don't forget to stop at some of the obvious "view points" and take some photos!

Once you've finished the Flume, all you have to do is climb back up the Rim Trail to Mount Rose Meadows. Usually I am just getting my groove on by this time, but most people are ready to crawl into a hole and sleep. This is just a reverse of the first section, and by this time I feel like the technical sections get easier. It is mostly up hill, though...so if you're already worked from the rest of the trail you may want to bail out and take Tunnel Creek down to the Lake. You can run this as a shuttle and drive back up to the starting point, or if you don't have two cars you can always hitchhike!

I like to ride this trail with my sweetie. He also thinks this is the best bike ride in the world! Although the fact that it's a 6 hour ride can deter some people. The good thing is that you can easily cut out or re-arrange the sections to suit your fitness and commitment level (and you can always do the car shuttle thing).

If you ever come to Lake Tahoe, I highly recommend this ride. In fact, if you don't do any other ride in Tahoe, you should at least do this one. It will make you want to come back!

The Chubb Trail in the suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri.

The Chubb is the most challenging trail in the St. Louis area (and I've heard it claimed the toughest in the midwest). It is a seven-mile dirt and gravel trail. This trail has everything, from fast fire road descents to winding riverside singletrack, to some good jumps and log crossings, to some small climbs, and some very nice technical sections.

I grew up in St. Louis but currently live in Chicago. So I usually go with my friends from high school when I'm back visiting.

The fire roads in Ohtaki, Japan. Miles and miles of blasted rocks and gravel around a gorgeous river gorges and unspoiled scenery, long uphills and descents. That was the best ride, ever.
