I'm hypothyroid. I have had all the classic textbook symptoms. These are what I had; weight gain, difficulty losing weight with diet & exercise, fatigue, dry skin, dry thinning hair, IBS with constipation, sensitivity to light, slow pulse, low blood pressure, headaches, vertigo, muscle & joint aches, ridged fingernails, cold feet, low body temp, deepened voice, sleep apnea, and feeling of fullness in the throat.
The first time I tested it did show. That's because symptoms show long before it shows in the TSH (standard test) if the TSH is the only test you are having done make sure its done first thing in the morning, as an afternoon dose could stop a diagnosis. A TSH over 2.0 shows your thyroid gland is slowing down, though most labs may say a 5.5 is normal. It's not though, as the new range is 0.3 to 3.0, with some sources sayng it should be 0.3 to 2.0. If you have any say in your testing, ask for a Free T4, Free T3, antibody test, along with the TSH.
The first medication I was on (Levoxyl) did not help me at all. The second was a combo of Levoxyl with a small amount of Cytomel. The combo helped some. Eventually I wanted more than 50% of the symptoms to be gone, so I switched to Armour. I've been on Armour for 3 years and about 95% of my symptoms are gone.
I'll put a few links below for thyroid, blood work, etc

Mine is weight gain, dry hair, bowel problems, low energy, cold hands and feet, and memory problems.
With medication the problems are not that bad, except the weight gain. It is very hard for me to lose weight and very easy to gain it.
A few years ago, a friend talked me into going off my meds and taking herbs instead. After just two months I was having such a hard time remembering anything, I was leaving notes for myself all over the house. I also had very little energy and was sleeping a lot. I went to the doctor and found out that my thyroid level had dropped so low, I was almost in a coma. I could of died.
I have never gone off my meds again.

I am hypothyroid and take medication for it. If you find that you need medication for a thryoid problem keep taking it and bug your doctor to test you for it regularly. My symptoms were fatigue, weight gain, slow bowels. I had several negative results before they found a slow normal level. It changes from too little to too much in strength but I am much better with the meds than without.
