Snow tires help you stop and steer in winter driving conditions, so the cars you listed are front wheel drive and will do well in snow. I think the Matrix can be had with all wheel drive, jeeps are not too great, too short a wheelbase, high center of gravity and lack stability control.

Whenever I have bought a car, I like to start by reading Consumer Reports (CR). CR does not accept advertising from anybody. And no donations from any manufacturer. They survey their readers on the items they test/review - so you get the opinion of thousands of other people (on topics like comfort, repair history, etc.).

Most people take a 10-15 minute "test drive". While they are driving, they day-dream like "Won't I look neat in this?" then spend several years paying off a car that might not be best for them.

To avoid this, after I narrow my list down to about 3 makes/models - I try to find a car rental company (try www.orbitz.com) where I can rent one of them for 1-2 days.

Once I really wanted a Saturn SL2. Rented one for a weekend trip (about 700 miles) and decided not to buy it. Same for a Toyota Camry. But did rent - and then bought a Honda Accord.

You might also check with the person you have your auto insurance with. Compare what the insurance cost will be for the models you have selected - you might be surprised they are not "all the same rate".

Also try www.bluebook.com to read their free reviews and to check prices.

The website for the Center for Auto Safety is also interesting.

Please for the love of god dont buy a Scion they are so incredibly stupid. Out of the vehicles you've named off I'd go with a jeep, its definitly going to be the best in the snow.

The Jeep is buy far the best choice of the ones you listed. They are great in the dirt, mud and snow and are very durable. Plus you never have to wash them, they look cool dirty! but it is ok if you don't get one because IT'S A JEEP THING- YOU WOULDN'T UNDERSTAND!
